What does NAIDOC stand for? stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Every year in July, NAIDOC celebrations are held across Australia, where we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This is a great opportunity for all locals and visitors to participate in a range of activities and to support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Each year, there is a theme for NAIDOC. This years theme is ‘Because of her, we can!’. This will celebrate the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made and continue to make to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.

Join in the week’s local events and celebrations whilst you’re visiting Australia.
